![]() A sewage pump with ½ horsepower is suitable for most homes, while large households with more than four people may require a sewage pump with 1 horsepower. With this in mind, the larger the household, the more horsepower a sewage grinder pump needs to keep up with daily demand. Horsepower determines just how much sewage a pump can handle daily. A residential sewage ejector pump requires an input and output of at least 2 inches to handle solid waste up to 2 inches in diameter. It’s also crucial to consider the size of the pump’s input and output. High-end pumps with heavy-duty cast-iron housings can weigh up to 45 pounds, while models that feature cast-iron-and-plastic construction might weigh around 20 pounds. The weight of these models varies depending on construction. ![]() Most sewage pumps measure about 16 inches tall and 11 inches wide. When shopping for a sewage ejector pump, it’s important to consider its size to determine if it will fit properly into a wastewater basin or septic pit. ![]() This includes the float that operates the sewage pump’s automatic on/off switch and the power cord, both of which can eventually degrade. Some sewage pumps are also designed to easily swap out pieces that are likely to wear out before the motor does. While many sewage pumps use impellers that consist of high-grade plastic, higher-end pumps feature impellers made from stronger materials, including aluminum and cast iron. The impeller, which is the part of the pump that moves the water, also needs to be durable to withstand the solid waste that passes through it. Cast-iron pumps are more expensive but are stronger and more durable and will therefore last longer than thermoplastic, which is less costly but will give out long before an iron pump. With that in mind, a sewage ejector pump is usually made out of either cast iron or thermoplastic. Sewage pumps spend their lives submerged in wastewater, so they need to be durable to endure. Ahead, learn more about these and other important attributes of a sewage pump. While the number of gallons per hour your sewage pump can move is perhaps the most crucial factor to consider when shopping for a grinder pump, there are other critical factors, including the quality of the pump’s construction and the size of its motor. With so many types of sewage ejector pumps on the market, determining which one is the right one can be challenging. They feature durable cast-iron construction that can hold up in the murky environment of a wastewater basin. The best sewage pumps feature powerful ½-horsepower motors that can move up to 10,000 gallons of wastewater per hour to the septic tank or the main sewage drain. Unlike effluent pumps or sump pumps, which move only water, sewage pumps can move wastewater with solids up to 2 inches in diameter. ![]() A septic system requires the use of a good sewage pump to move a home’s wastewater to the septic tank. Homes outside of municipal sewer systems rely on septic systems for waste management. The true numbers are a bit different - the engine has more than 256 tiles in a tilesheet already.Īnd I also skipped technical facts that make it easier to work with full byte sizes (8-bit, 16-bit, 32 bit) and ignoring layers and so on.īut basically the current tileset definition is most likely at one of the barriers where the computer would have to switch to more complex calculations if even one tile is added to the current definition.Īnd that makes the proposal here a question if you are willing to accept the added lag and complications for tilesets that could easily be handled in a different way, by giving special maps each different tilesets, And it would be idiotic to not use the entire range of IDs that are now available by that minimum increase, which means anything less than doubling the tileset is a waste as you already get all the disadvantages of a double-size tileset no matter if you limit yourself to only adding a few tiles or not. So the disadvantages of increasing the numberspace by one bit are there from the very beginning - larger storage needs and a number of others. But with 9 bits you can store numbers between 0 and 511 - double as much numbers as available on 8-bit. The smallest possible increase would be by one bit, from 8-bit-numbers to 9-bit-numbers. If you suddenly want more than 256 different tiles in your tileset, you'll need to increase the "space" available to number storage of the IDs in the map-grid. That would allow a use of a 256 tile tileset, with each of the tiles in that tileset having one of the numbers between 0 and 255 as the ID. Now assume that each position in the grid has a 8-bit-number storage, allowing it to store the numbers between 0 and 255. That means that the map itself is only a grid of numbers, with each number standing for a specific tile that will be placed there when the map is displayed. Depends if there's something on the engine dev side that says no to this obviously amazing improvement to everyone's lives and you will be celebrated for eons to come if you do I'll give you a simplified example with low numbers I don't foresee anything horrible to the end user.Issues that might arise from this feature: Doing tile swaps in photoshop and then making an entire new tileset in the engine to incorporate a single tile edit for a single map is a pain.If there's a technical reason why more tabs shouldn't/can't be used, additional space such as 64x8 or more would be much better than the current 32x8 tileset sizes. It's difficult to include multiple biomes in the same map without using parallax with the existing, limited tilesets. This feature is great because of the following: Increase supported size of tile sheets to 64x8 or larger, OR. ![]() Increase number of map tile tabs available, OR. ![]() The result is a spherical shape, and not because we specifically told it to become a sphere, but because that’s what happens when you simulate physics on a more granular level. ![]() Instead, as more material collects, the pressure increases and starts pushing out material, preventing a total collapse. For example, with SPH, material will collect under the influence of gravity, but it will not all fall to the center of mass. Why SPH?īecause you get accurate simulation with emergent behavior, rather than disparate modeling of phenomena that needs to be stitched together. Combine this with gravity and you start to see a simulation with emergent behavior that matches what we observe in real life. And then you can estimate how this will move over time under different forces. So for the future of SPH in Universe Sandbox, the current debugging visuals, where you can see individual particles, will ideally be replaced by something that better represents the continuous fluid that is actually being modeled.īy tracking how each of these particles move, and more importantly how they move in relation to their neighbors, you can calculate pressure and viscosity (friction) at any point in Think of it like buoys in an ocean: the buoys will each monitor the properties at their location, and they are distinct from the continuous fluid, ie the ocean, that they are monitoring. ![]() Together, they describe the properties that exist at any given point in a flow of material, but they themselves are not the material. You can see these particles clearly in any of the videos in this post.īut the “smoothed” part of “smoothed-particle hydrodynamics” means that these particles are just sample points of what is actually a continuous material, where they each contribute to the properties at a given point based on a weighted, smoothed, average. How? First, the material, such as a planet, is broken into a number of “particles” that each have properties such as mass, temperature, velocity, and position. So in short, SPH will help create more detailed, realistic simulations of collisions, fragmentation, and formation of different types of objects in Universe Sandbox. And even in the case of large chunks of solid rock colliding with each other, there is such intense temperature and pressure that the materials behave more like fluid rather than rigid solids: they’ll stretch and distort and be torn apart, rather than splinter, crack, and shatter. This is also true for planets, whether it’s a gas giant or a rocky planet with, or even without, a molten core. On an astronomical scale, many of the objects you can simulate, like stars and galaxies, behave like fluids. That might make you think that we’d use this for simulating something like water flow on a planet’s surface, but “fluid” here actually has more to do with simulating much larger objects. SPH is a computational method commonly used for modeling fluids (though it can also handle solids). Or if you’re curious about SPH, but perhaps not curious enough to read 35 pages on it, here’s a crash course: What is SPH and how does it work?įor a deep dive into the mechanics of SPH, check out this paper from our very own physics developer, written back in 2010 (interestingly, not written in relation to Universe Sandbox, but for another project that was similar in many ways - there’s a reason why we hired him many years ago to help build this new version of Universe Sandbox, and it had more to do with relevant experience than it did with his propensity for typos… *wink*). ![]() This is a behind-the-scenes look at a feature that we are still working on. SPH is NOT included in Universe Sandbox yet. Introducing… smoothed-particle hydrodynamic fluid simulation. We’re excited to explore its possibilities even more.īut right now, let’s turn our attention to something our physics developer, Alexander, has been working on. Surface Grids is a massive new feature that changes a lot with the core simulation of objects in Universe Sandbox, and so far we’ve just scratched the surface of what it can do. We plan to continue to add to the Surface Grids feature with even more detailed surface simulation through next year and beyond. If you haven’t, time to get out from that rock you’ve been living under and start terraforming all those other rocks floating through space. Also pay attention to the surface of envelopes, cards, etc. For original pieces, I recommend high-quality watercolor paper (available at artist supply stores), if you want to play it safe, choose »hot pressed«, but coarser watercolor or handmade paper can also work fantastically if you’ve had some practice. Rhodia or Triomphe by Clairefontaine, – otherwise you’ll constantly struggle to keep the nib from getting stuck in the paper! More exquisite papers with some structure require experience and intuition. Martin’s Bleedproof White – this is actually a correction fluid and must also be diluted! You can find instructions here.Įspecially for beginners and for practicing, I recommend rather smooth paper – e.g. You will need to dilute these with a little water for use with pointed pen. Still just right for some projects! – If you’re looking for a truly waterproof ink, I recommend Ziller’s Inks, highly pigmented acrylic-based inks. Iron gall ink – the classic among writing inks, most medieval codices were written with it – produces fantastic finest hairlines and the line hardly ever breaks even with heavy swell strokes, it is lightfast and quite waterproof, but due to its high acid content causes steel nibs to wear out quickly. If I could only take one ink to a desert island, it would definitely be walnut ink: it’s both great for practicing and dark enough even for scanning, flows beautifully from the nib, a good alternative to iron gall ink, with a warmer hue, water-thinnable (for lighter tints), water-soluble, but lightfast. Like all nibs, however, they naturally wear out with use – pointed nibs are consumables! Somewhat more expensive, but more versatile, is an adjustable penholder made of wood and metal, that will be able to hold a wide variety of nibs. Decide for yourself! An alternative is to use elbow nibs, which can be inserted into a normal, i.e. Also not every nib fits – nevertheless many colleagues like this holder. ![]() In the plastic holder, the nib sits very rigidly and you can’t adjust the angle of the nib to the paper at all. The entry-level, inexpensive plastic model is the Speedball, which I recommend only to a limited extent. Most oblique penholders have a small metal flange inserted at an oblique angle into a body of wood, acrylic or other material. The latter allows you to write with the pointed nib in a way that makes it easier to create smooth swells. Of course, you’ll also need a penholder in which to insert the nib - for pointed pen calligraphy, I prefer slanted or "oblique" penholders. ![]() You just have to try a lot, and rummage in online sellers, household liquidations and junk stores! A concrete tip: A solid, durable modern pointed nib with a good price-performance ratio is the Brause 361 Steno nib – a great beginner’s nib, because it glides smoothly over the paper, still allows fine lines and also works very well with gouache and metallic inks. Since I don’t want to contribute to the hype, here’s just a hint that there are also lesser known, very good nibs besides the famous »dream points«. Admittedly: Most of my favorite nibs are antique nibs, are no longer made, and prices have risen to astronomical heights in some cases in recent years due to the awakened interest in calligraphy. My usual answer is, it depends! Not every nib is suitable for every paper, not every ink works equally well on every paper. very often I’m also asked about the best nib holders, inks and papers. What nib? – Regarding calligraphic pens aka nibsįew questions I get asked more often on Instagram or YouTube than this one about what nib(s) I use. When we were getting very close to releasing Half-Life (less than a week or so), we found there were already some projects that we needed to start working on, but we couldn't risk checking in code to the shipping version of the game. Valve employee Erik Johnson explained the engine's nomenclature on the Valve Developer Community: Carmack commented on his blog in 2004 that "there are still bits of early Quake code in Half-Life 2". Source distantly originates from the GoldSrc engine, itself a heavily modified version of John Carmack's Quake engine with some code from the Quake II engine. The Source engine is most well-known for its advancements in physics, AI, and graphics. In the late 2010s, Valve created the Source 2 engine to replace Source, with it publicly debuting alongside Half-Life: Alyx. Valve continued to create incremental updates to the Source engine after its 2004 release, most of which coincided with games created by Valve. It is most well-known for its usage by Valve, but the engine has been used both by small teams and individuals to create modifications of Valve games, and other studios creating distinct games, notably Troika Games' title Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. It debuted as the successor to GoldSrc in 2004 with the releases of Half-Life: Source, Counter-Strike: Source, and Half-Life 2.
